Level 4 Award in Programming (Java)
The purpose of the Level 4 Award in Programming (Java) is to give learners the knowledge and skills to support progression into employment in a programming role, specialising in the Java language. This qualification is designed for learners who want to increase their knowledge, looking to progress their knowledge of programming and learn practical skills which can be used to seek work or proceed into study at level 5.
Aims of the course:
- understand and use the fundamentals of programming
- focus on the study of programming in the digital sector
- understand the factors involved in web application development in Java
- Offer breadth and depth of study, incorporating a key core of knowledge or programming fundamentals
- Apply these with the fundamentals of programming to plan, develop and review a web application using Java
- Explain the functions of the JDK and demonstrate its installation and use
- Understand the significance of emerging technology when working in programming
- Provide opportunities to acquire a number of practical skills, including planning and creating a program, and debugging and testing code
- plan, create and review a program in their chosen programming language
Structure:
To be awarded the Level 4 Award in Programming (Java), learners must successfully complete 2 mandatory units.
Mandatory units:
- Unit 01 The fundamentals of programming

o Understand data types, statements and syntax
o Understand functions, objects, classes and libraries
o Understand debugging and testing
o Understand emerging technology in programming
- Unit 02 Developing a web application using Java
Key Areas Covered:
o Understand the factors involved in web application development using Java
o Plan a project using Java
o Create the web application using Java
o Review the web application

- There are no specific prior skills/knowledge a learner must have for this qualification. However, learners may find it helpful if they have already achieved a level 3 qualification.
